DAVID GILMOUR - ON AN ISLAND!

David Gilmour
Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour has more than one reason to
celebrate on his 60th birthday next year - March 6th 2006 sees the
long-awaited release of his new solo album "On An Island".

Released on EMI Records, the album is the first solo release from
David since 1984's "About Face". Following the release of "On An
Island", David will embark on a European and American tour during the
months of March, April and May 2006 - and we should have details of
these dates soon.

"On An Island" is produced by David, along with Chris Thomas and Phil
Manzanera. Orchestrations are by the renowned composer Zbigniew
Preisner and were recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London.

The title track teams Gilmour with David Crosby and Graham Nash -
three of the greatest voices in contemporary music. Richard Wright,
Robert Wyatt, Jools Holland, and Guy Pratt also feature on the album.

- Roger Waters - Syd Barrett - Nick Mason - Richard Wright - David Gilmour -

In 1964 3 school buddies got together to form the band Sigm6. George Roger Waters (guitar), Nick Mason (drums) & Richard Wright (keys) went on to change the name to The T-Sets. Lacking success with both these names the band once again changed its name in 1965 to The Abdads. The Abdads added 3 new members to the group,  Clive Metcalf on Bass, Keith Nobles & Juliette Gale on backup vocals.  1966 Rick Wright went on to marry Juliette Gale and the Abdads broke up. Later that year George legally changed his name to Roger. In the Fall of 1966 Roger switched to Bass guitar and 2 more guitarists were recruited; Bob Close & Roger Syd Barret. Soon after they changed their name again to THE PINK FLOYD SOUND. Towards the end of 1966 Bob Close left the band. The band finally released their first single - Arnold Layne - about a clothes stealing transvestite. Not to long after this the band dropped 'THE' & 'SOUND' from their name, hence becoming PINK FLOYD and recording there first album 'Pipers at the Gates of Dawn'. They recorded this just down the hall from the beatles recording Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. - The band had scheduled their first tour of USA. But Syd's dependence on LSD (acid) had made his behavior more and more erratic. By the end of 1967 Syd's rantings and spaced out antics were really beginning to upset the band, there was talk of replacing him. They recruited David Gilmore an old friend of Roger & Syd's. At first he was to cover Syd on stage, in case Syd had an episode, David could fill in. The band tried to keep Syd in the band but by this time his love of LSD was ruining any chance of staying. In 1968 they kicked Syd out due to his every increasing dependency on LSD. In 1974 Syd Barret was institutionalized for his own well being.

The rest, as we know it, is history. The band PINK FLOYD went on without Syd to become one of the top rock bands to ever come out of England...
